Nutrition and Dairy
What is nutrition?
Nutrition is a complex process which involves understanding the mechanisms though which organisms use and absorb nutrients to develop and maintain tissues and obtain the energy they need to function.
What is nutritional status?
The nutritional status is the body’s condition as a result of this process, resulting from a balance between nutritional content and consumption.
For this reason, it is important to assess, both in sickness and health, the child’s nutritional status as part of a complete physical examination, since growth is the most reliable indication of health.
The best way to assess a child’s nutritional status is to measure his growth in terms of weight and height.
Aims of nutrition
The main aim of our diet should be to keep the body in the best of health. In addition:
– It should allow the individual to perform all the activities that can be expected of the human being.
– For children, it should enable the body to grow normally and without problems, building a solid and resistant barrier against all illnesses.
Adequate intake of nutrients
Ensuring a child has the right nutrients in his diet is a decisive factor in achieving good health and the right development in weight and height. The right diet should therefore cover the needs of the child’s body in terms of calories, the main nutrient classes, salts, coenzymes and other biogenetic factors.
Eating too much can cause the child’s body mass to increase but not in terms of height. A qualitative and quantitative shortage of nutrients, on the other hand, can lead to weight loss and, if this goes on for an extended amount of time, it can lead to reduced height.
